Knowing God through His Word

God said to His people through the prophet Hosea, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hos. 4:6, CSB). Notice who He was talking about. Not the pagans. His own people. They still had their religion, but the Lord charged that there was no knowledge of God in the land (Hos. 4:1). That lack cost them everything. Why? Because knowing God is not a feeling, and it is not a custom passed down from our fathers. It is knowing who He is and what He has said.

Where do we gain that knowledge? From Scripture, studied properly. Not a verse picked up here and another there, but each passage read in its setting, the way the writer meant it. Paul told Timothy to be "a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed," "correctly teaching the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15, CSB). You took a step when you enrolled. Do not stop there. Class begins November 2, but you can start today. Open your Bible, read Philippians 1:1-11 slowly, and write down what you see. God's Word is waiting to speak to you.

While you wait: get ready for November 2

Class begins Monday, November 2. What do you do until then? Get ready. Not your notebook first, but your heart.

1. Prepare your heart

Why pray before we study? Because the Bible is not like any other book. God gave it, and God opens it. Ezra "determined in his heart to study the law of the Lord, obey it, and teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel" (Ezra 7:10, CSB). Study first, then obey, then teach. We ask the same of God, four ways.

  • Direction. Trust the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding (Prov. 3:5-6).
  • Guidance. Ask Him to show you His ways and lead you in His truth (Ps. 25:4-5).
  • His will. Ask Him to teach you to do His will (Ps. 143:10). Then say what Jesus said: "Not my will, but yours" (Luke 22:42).
  • Light. The Spirit of truth guides us into the truth (John 16:13). Pray that God will open the eyes of your heart (Eph. 1:17-18).

If you do not know how to start, pray this:

Lord, I come to You with an open Bible and an open heart. Teach me Your ways. Guide me in Your truth. Show me Your will, and give me a heart to do it. Open my eyes by Your Spirit to see what is in Your Word. Not my will, but Yours. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

2. Read the passages we will use

We study one passage together in the first weeks: Philippians 1:1-11. Paul wrote this letter from prison (Phil. 1:7, 13), and it is full of thanks. Read it before class begins. We will also return to these verses: Ezra 7:10, Psalm 119:105, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, and James 1:22.

3. Things to do this week

  • Read Philippians 1:1-11 once a day. Read it out loud, slowly. Each day, write one thing you did not see the day before.
  • Copy it by hand. Write the passage in your notebook one time. Slow writing is slow reading.
  • Underline any word you see more than once. Then ask, why does Paul keep saying it?
  • Find Philippi on the map. Look at the maps in the back of your Bible. Then read Acts 16:11-15 to see how the church there began.
  • Write three questions. What have you always wanted to ask about the Bible? Bring them to our Friday Zoom Q&A, which starts November 6.
  • Memorize one verse. Choose Ezra 7:10 or Psalm 119:105.
  • Tell one believer. Ask a friend or family member to pray for you as you begin.
  • Pick a time and a place. The same hour and the same chair each day make a habit.
